Processing and properties of Ti-15Zr-15Mo-(1-3)Ag alloys for applications as biofunctional materials

Titanium (Ti) is employed as a biomaterial because of its superior biocompatibility and favorable mechanical properties that can be changed with the addition alloying elements, such zirconium molybdenum. Silver an element recognized for antibacterial action, which improve strength decrease Young’s modulus Ti. This work studies effect silver (1 3 wt%) on crystalline structure, microstructure, Vickers microhardness Ti-15Zr-15Mo (wt%) alloy, targeting potential application biofunctional material. The ingots were produced by argon arc melting subsequently subjected to heat treatment homogenization, hot-rolling solubilization treatment. Chemical composition indicated good quality processing alloy. Crystalline structure microstructure analyzed X-ray diffraction, optical microscopy scanning electron showed only titanium’s β phase. Finally, studied measurements presented low content did not significantly modify alloy’s properties, but it include bulk.
